Born in Glowerhaven, Arabella Smee's mother died when she was very young, leaving her alone with her father, a man ill equipped to raise a daughter on his own. With precious little female influence, and her father prone to drink, she learned to take care of herself early on. A teenager when her father finally died in the depths of a bottle, she did the only practical thing: she sought to better her circumstances, at any cost.

Dressing as a boy, she joined the crew of a ship in port, not realizing her new captain was a pirate, and not just any pirate, but Captain Hook himself. Though careful, inevitably her lack of skill and strength earned the captain's ire, and her secret was discovered.

She has never been sure if he was moved to mercy because she was a girl, or impressed that she did not beg for her life, but demanded a chance to prove herself at any cost. Promoted from deckhand, she has since become first mate, allowing her a private bunk so she can keep her secret and preserve her virtue on a ship full of desperate men. His willingness to let her work has earned her undying loyalty, and though few can understand precisely why Hook keeps one so ill-adept at the task of sailing as his left hand, she takes pains every day to learn all she can one day be worthy of her post, and her captain's regard.
